Sweet-Pea Pilot Hat

I have been saving this idea to share with you when I got some photos up. But I haven’t taken any photos, so you will just have to take my word for it that I have made 5 of these adorable little hats so far. SO much fun – SUCH the perfect design – SO perfect for little heads on spring days. I finished a hot pink one for Claire today and now I am done sewing for a while. Every 10 years or so I get burnt out on sewing and put my machine away for a few hours. Ha. I am truly addicted, but this is the last project for a while – I don’t have enough time to justify the mess, so I’m gonna clean up and just go outside and pull weeds in my garlic bed when I get the urge to sew.

The funny thing about that hat pattern, is that I had just about got one made myself and was gonna post the PDF on my blog for you, but Meg saved me the trouble – and hers is multi-sized. I don’t follow her construction instructions exactly, but I do recommend the pattern pieces themselves. (I sewed my hat pieces right-sides together rather than her version of a flat-felled seam, and I finished my edges very similar to the edges of my Cover-Me-Pretty Cami) I love to make these out of thrifted t-shirts. Hannah Anderson sells these little pilot hats and my younger siblings wore them as their second skin on our days on the homestead. I’m so glad my kids can wear them now, for virtually no cost and very little time.Would make a great baby gift along with one or two of these.

and just think how cute they'd be on a newborn in merino (lined with knit). That pattern has been evernoted since it came out, but now your bib tute is keeping it company ๐Ÿ™‚

I am at the beach now, and all of the babies in our group wear them to keep the wind and sand out of their baby ears ๐Ÿ™‚
I wore something similar (knitted though) at night when I was little. We lived in an old house heated entirely by a wood stove, so we wore those to keep warm at night – What a cozy memory your picture brings back ๐Ÿ™‚

Those are cute! Why are they called pilot caps, though? They make me think of pilgrim babies, though I'm not sure why.

Oh, how funny. Just this morning I was thinking how I MUST make some of these for my girlies.
