Though I finished highschool almost 10 years ago, have been married for over 3 years, and am the mother to two children, there was yet one life experience I felt I lacked to initiate me into the world of adults:
Jury Summons
Almost everyone else in my family and circle of local friends has received jury summons in the last few years – Joanna, Alyssa, Sue, Kelly, Micah, Alice, my mom, my mother and father-in-law, even my own husband! Yet I remained uncalled – until last night.
I got home at 11 having driven down toward Hornell with Elise for Rachel’s Maidenhood Party, and there it was on the counter waiting for me. I’ve told everyone I’ve seen today of this monumental occaision – the arrival of my long-awaited ticket into official adult. My mother-in-law said I reminded her of Ernest in my excitemtnt to serve. ๐ Question is, will they actually need me on the day of, or will having Claire along disqualify me? I will have to wait till next week to find out.
I also never received a jury summons living my whole life in NY (and I wanted to do it so bad!). Then living in NE, just months before moving from NE back to NY, I get a summons. Figures! In NE, they had an exemption if you were nursing. Pretty sure it's the same here b/c I believe that happened to Caryn. She showed up at the court with Enoch and they were like, “Uh, you can't have him in here.” So that pretty much settled that & they sent her home!
I’ve been called twice -both times in college. Both times I was let off when they found out I’d have to skip class and/or finals. Hope your jaunt isn’t too arduous.
Oh, I had such a bad attitude when I had jury duty! I wish I had been as enthusiastic about it as you are! ๐
No encouragement here. I was told when I called that I’d have to find childcare for the baby, and that I’d have to pump. Fortunately that time ended up being cancelled the night before, and I’ve since served successfully.>>But don’t show up with her, because the trial is usually (in our county anyway) the day that you’re asked to show up. You’ll just be asked to leave with her by the judge and that could be.. well intimidating with counsel there and the like. It’s easiest just to call and tell them your situation.. considering how young Claire is, I’m thinking the clerk will tell you she’ll put you in for a later date. >>I think it’s cool that you want to serve though!
That last sentence was supposed to read, “You look great…” =)
My feelings regarding jury duty are totally the opposite of yours! I would do just about anything to get off the hook as far as having to be part of deciding whether or not someone is innocent or guilty. Not something I want to be responsible for. You do great by the way.
Since you have 2 children that depend on you for care (plus one is nursing), they will not make you serve. I know because it happened to me last year.
Trina you really look great in that picture!!It gives me hope to be back to my slimmer size someday!!>>I can’t believe that you are excited about Jury Duty!!I have been summoned 2 times since September and both times it has been canceled the night before.
