Real Men Wear…Kilts?

I told you I was working on a unique project this week. I finally finished it, so here are the pictures. This is a utility kilt I created for my brother, Joel, who is leaving on an African Safari on Friday and wanted to wear one on his trip. It was a unique and challenging project, working without a pattern, and never having made anything like it before. I got most of my inspiration from utilikilts.com (caution – some objectionable advertising on site)

After I got all the pleats measured, marked, ironed, sewed, and top stitched, and the waist band installed, I hammered in the heavy-duty snaps on the front flap. Jesse was a great help – sort of! (he kept stealing my hammer!)

He then proceeded to model it for me, but it didn’t really fit.

Instead, I had my younger brother-in-law try it on so I could get pictures of it before I expressed mailed it to Virginia so Joel would get it before he left on his Safari. The kilt features 1 1/2 inch pleats all the way around, a 10 snap closure system, and an expandable pocket on the left side (since his gun will be in his right hand!)

Here is a close-up of the inside, showing all 24 pleats.
I hope he likes it, as it was a lot of work. But that is what you do for a brother. ๐Ÿ™‚

Perhaps tomorrow I shall have time to tell you about the next project – code name “Operation Blue Moose”. ๐Ÿ™‚

YES! I agree, real men DO wear kilts! My husband wore one for our wedding. And now he wears it at least once a year when we go to the Rennaisance Festival!http://flickr.com/photos/10304241@N05/sets/72157605863015608/

I know commenting on this is a little late but I was at a basketball camp all week. I think its funny that you made him a kilt and you mentioned utilikilts because when my class went on our trip to Seattle we saw a utilikilts store and we went in! It honestly was quite scary! And we left right away! But we just thought it would be fun to be able to say we had been in a kilt store! :)It wasn’t a very nice store!

Once again I wish i had inherited this gene. You remind me SO much of my mom and great-grandma. They could sew anything they could dream up, and my mom frequently does ๐Ÿ™‚Looks like a lot of fun!!
