Is he not incredible smart? We do puzzles together in the afternoon after his nap. He rarely needs my help.
His words include “Mom”, “Dadda”, and the noises of several barnyard animals. Last week in Church I brought the wrong book for him to look at during the sermon – “Open the Barn Door”. He was making animal sounds through the whole sermon! Mooing and crowing like a rooster. Then I thought he had settled down, when I heard this odd noise – he was breathing really raspy through his nose – it sounded like an asthma attack! I looked down and realized he was trying to make the pig noise. ๐
He has over 2 dozen signs, and is learning new ones every day. This week his favorites are “Baby”, “Bird”, and “Motorcycle”. He says “Baby” whenever he hears the word. ๐ I think he’s ready to be a big brother. ๐
I look forward to the email, Trina! Thank you for the invite to visit; my travel schedule is pretty full these days with work, but who-knows, I might be able to swing a weekender in NY! Thanks again. -cvo
Btw, I never congratulated you are your pregnancy. I hope everything goes well and that you have a wonderful pregnancy.
Corrie – I would love to talk more on this with you – I will contain it in an e-mail a little later this week, ok? I don't mind the questions at all. ๐ You know, you should really come and visit – the guest room's days are limited as it will eventually be the baby's room, but I want to use it as much as possible while I can! ๐ Then you could observe Jesse first hand!
oh!!! I forgot, I was also going to ask:
do you think you'll teach #2 to sign as well?
what aspects of parenting do you think you'll same/differently for #2?
(curious minds love to take notes & collect info!!)
Thanks for the update!! Verbal development is something I'm very curious about, and given I don't have kids of my own & am rarely around them any more down in OC, I am living vicariously through what you share!!
The reason I'm interested is I focused some on the psychology & teachind methods behind verbal development during my time at SPU and also during my field study work with kids at Seattle's Children's Hospital on their verbal development (among other dev. things) during my degree internship. However, because I didn't work directly with kids who signed, I didn't delve into the whole field of study on the developmental verbal-wiring & communication skills that go along with signing. It's been something I've remained curiously interested in, though, for reasons of having friends back Home in WA who have taught their infant/toddlers to sign before they could talk.
What can you tell me about your methodology for developing the verbal aspect of Jesse's communication alongside his ever-increasing signing vocabulary? What books/studies are out there that you've read on it? It's just interesting to me!
Is he talking much these days?
