Five Minute Fridays – A few of my favorite things –
I can’t hear this phrase without the song starting in my head – “These are a few of my favorite things…”
When I was, oh, 19 or so, I was involve in a production of The Sound of Music. It was all put together by homeschooled teens desperate to be involve in some form of drama and creative arts. One girl drafted and edited the entire script from the movie, we learned the songs, I sewed costumes, and we rented out a beautiful little opera house in Earlville, NY. that was modeled after the theatre that Abraham Lincoln was shot in. So many hours of work. So many memories. So much fun. And a life-long ability to sing nearly every song in the musical.
“When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I’m feeling sad…I simply remember my favorite things, and then I don’t feel so bad!”
There is a simple, Biblical truth to this song. Counting our blessings, focusing on the gifts that God has given us can have a magical effect in our hearts.
Stop.
Have you been joining in with Five Minute Fridays? It’s a fun way to get yourself writing. I’m doing it just for the practice in finding my own writing voice, which gets a bit lost between changing diapers, sleepless nights, and to-do lists. It’s fun to get back to the reason I started this blog in the first place – to write and have a place to create.
If you’ve been writing, too, leave me a comment so I can come over and see what you have created! Kateri has done some great Five minute bursts over on her blog – lovely compliment to her beautiful nature photography and the occasional poem.
I had the same lapse into song as you: Never had the opportunity to do The Sound of Music. Our high school did it after I graduated.
I agree with you though, the song is meant to remind us of the good, during the bad.
Thanks for the blog shout out Trina. ๐ I almost didn't do a five minute friday last night becasue I came home from work and fell asleep–but then I woke up at 11:30 and couldn't fall back asleep. The Sound of Music production sounds like it was so cool.
Coming over from Gypsy Mama. What a neat experience to have been in the old opera house production! Sound of Music is one of my favorite musicals, too. In a former life–long before marriage and kids I had aspirations of being on broadway! (If you want to see some *really BAD* “My Favorite Things” lyrics, you can stop by my blog!) Happy to have been here today!
Hi, I'm visiting from Lisa-Jo's place. ๐
Wow, what a great story! I have to say, I'm pretty amazed at your production. The Sound of Music was one of my favorites growing up, too–one of three musicals we watched repeatedly in my house. Oh, just thinking about it brings back happy memories. ๐
Visiting you from 5Min Fridays. That is so cool that you rented an old opera house! The Sound of Music is my favorite production, too!!!
