Read my review of Kay Arthur’s book, When the Hurt Runs Deep, and leave a comment to enter the giveaway!
“We all have hurts in our past, some that run very deep. We don’t often dive down there and check on how they’re healing but maybe we should. Hurts in our past can negatively affect every relationship and every part of our life if we don’t experience true healing.
I enjoyed Kay Arthur’s gentle, loving voice and the soothing effect of all the beautiful scriptures she includes to guide you to true, deep healing.Throughout the book she shares real life stories, from Job and Joseph in the Bible, to to Kay’s own story of her first husband’s suicide. Whatever your hurt is you will find a story you can relate to (comforting in itself) and see that God’s healing reaches even to the depth of abuse, abandonment, abortion, suicide, miscarriage, cancer, divorce, etc.
I especially appreciated the chapters, “The Benefits of Suffering”, and “Life Changes…God Does Not” Throughout the book Kay has key points highlighted and practical steps you can take to address the deep hurts in your life. There is also a small group or individual study guide in the back to help you get the most out of the book.
Now, this wouldn’t be an honest review if I didn’t tell you what I didn’t like about the book. Just two small things: First, in her gentle, conversational tone, Kay is not very concise. If you’re looking for a quick fix, this book is not it – it’s a time commitment to read through each chapter. But perhaps you need to take the time. True healing rarely happens overnight.
Secondly, Kay hints at but never quite says right out what the deep hurt was that drove her to write this book. I’m sure she had valid reasons – many of our hurts affect other people and sharing details would only bring more pain. Perhaps the story is not over yet. But she certainly let whatever it was bring her closer to God and allowed her to truly speak to others in pain. There are plenty of other stories of pain and healing, though, so I was satisfied in my desire for real life examples.”
I received this book free through Multnomah’s Blogging for Books program. It’s really simple, and really cool. I get to choose from the available titles, they send me the book, I read it, write and post a review on my blog and on their website, then I get to request another book. And the book is mine, to do with as I please….
After reading this book I knew I wanted to pass it on to my readers. If you have experienced a deep hurt or know someone who needs this book, simply leave a comment that includes your name. I’ll draw a name randomly and ask you to contact me so I can share this book with you. Giveaway ends midnight on Monday, April 25th, 2011.
